    Grief & Bereavement Counseling

The pain of loss can feel overwhelming. Grief is the emotional reaction and emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. Bereavement refers to the process of recovering from the death of a loved one. You may experience all kinds of difficult and unexpected emotions, from shock or anger, to disbelief, guilt and profound sadness.

The process of adapting to a loss can dramatically change from person to person, depending on his or her background, beliefs, relationship to the person who’s passed, and other factors. When we talk about grief, we also acknowledge grief exists with other types of life losses, to include:

    1) Loss of employment status, business, or change in job

    2) Leaving home or moving to a new home

    3) Illness/loss of health

    4) Death of a pet

    5) Graduation from school

    6) Loss of physical ability

    7) Loss of financial security

Common symptoms of grief can be physical, emotional or social. A few common symptoms in these categories include:

    Physical

    • Crying and sighing
    • Headaches
    • Loss of appetite
    • Difficulty sleeping
    • Weakness
    • Fatigue

    Emotional

    • Feelings of sadness and yearning
    • Feelings of worry or anger
    • Feelings of frustration or guilt

    Social

    • Feeling detached from others
    • Self-isolation from social contact
    • Behaving in ways that are not normal for you

Every grieving experience is different. A person may be able to continue their day-to-day routine after one loss, yet not be able to get out of bed after other losses. Whatever you are experiencing now, grief and bereavement counseling can be helpful.
